Midjourney v7 vs DALL-E 3 vs Stable Diffusion: Which AI Image Generator Wins in 2025?
We tested all three leading AI image generators with identical prompts across 6 categories. Here are our honest findings on quality, speed, cost and control.
The Battle for AI Image Generation Supremacy
AI image generation has matured rapidly. In 2025, three tools dominate: Midjourney v7, DALL-E 3 (via ChatGPT Plus), and Stable Diffusion XL (open-source). We ran identical prompts across six test categories to find out which is actually best — and for whom.
The Test Methodology
We used six prompt categories: photorealistic portraits, fantasy landscapes, product mockups, typography/logos, abstract art, and technical diagrams. Each model received the same prompt, same seed where possible, and no post-processing.
1. Photorealistic Portraits
Winner: Midjourney v7
Midjourney's v7 model produces strikingly photorealistic human portraits with natural skin texture, accurate lighting, and consistent facial features. DALL-E 3 is close but tends toward slightly "painted" skin and occasional anatomy errors. Stable Diffusion requires extensive fine-tuning (LoRA models, CFG tweaking) to reach the same quality.
2. Fantasy & Concept Art
Winner: Midjourney v7
Midjourney has always excelled here. Its aesthetic sense — dramatic lighting, rich colour palettes, cinematic composition — is unmatched out of the box. DALL-E 3 produces cleaner but sometimes blander concept art. Stable Diffusion with the right model checkpoint is competitive, but needs expertise.
3. Product Mockups & Commercial Use
Winner: DALL-E 3
For clean product shots, packaging mockups, and commercial-ready imagery, DALL-E 3 wins. It has stronger prompt adherence — it actually reads and follows complex instructions. Midjourney has a habit of "beautifying" things in ways that drift from the brief. Crucially, OpenAI grants commercial rights to DALL-E 3 output by default.
4. Typography & Text in Images
Winner: DALL-E 3
This has historically been AI image generation's Achilles heel. DALL-E 3 now renders short text phrases legibly in most cases. Midjourney v7 has improved but still garbles longer text. Stable Diffusion struggles most here without specialised models.
5. Abstract & Experimental Art
Winner: Stable Diffusion XL
Open-source wins for creative freedom. You can chain models, use ControlNet for structure, mix styles with LoRA, and experiment endlessly without per-image costs. The ceiling is much higher — if you're willing to invest time learning the tools.
6. Speed & Cost
| Tool | Speed | Cost | Free Tier? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midjourney v7 | ~15 sec | $10–$60/mo | No |
| DALL-E 3 | ~10 sec | Included in ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) | Limited |
| Stable Diffusion | Varies (local = free) | Free (self-hosted) | Yes (local) |
Verdict: Which Should You Use?
- Midjourney v7 — Best for artists, creators, and anyone who wants stunning images with minimal effort.
- DALL-E 3 — Best for marketers, writers, and business use where prompt accuracy and commercial rights matter.
- Stable Diffusion XL — Best for developers, researchers, and power users who want unlimited creative control at zero cost.
The good news: you don't have to pick just one. Use our Image Generation Prompts collection to get the most out of all three.
